If you Make it, they will Come: Homemade Deer Supplement

As we all know, archery hunting can be as expensive as the sportsman/woman wants it to be. Hundreds and thousands of dollars can be spent on equipment, food plots, scouting, fuel and miscellaneous gear. In a world where there is potential to break the bank out of pure addiction, it is relieving to know that in some areas you can save money. One of the biggest expenses for me in archery hunting is putting out mineral. 5 to 10 lb. bags of mineral can cost upwards of 30 dollars. This expense can be minimized significantly if someone takes the step to make their own mineral supplement. This method and recipe that is provided below has given me better results on horn growth and has more deer coming to the site. This recipe was given to me by a cattle farmer and it works. These components can be purchased at the nearest Tractor Supply or farming supply store.

Ingredients:

50 lb. of Trace Mineral

50 lbs. of Di-calcium Phosphate

50 lbs. of Salt

50 lbs. of Dried Molasses

Directions to Make:

  • Pour all the ingredients into a clean garbage can.
  • Mix with a shovel until it is evenly distributed throughout the entire batch
  • Cover with a lid and store in a dry place.

Directions to Use:

  • Clear a 3-foot area on the ground in desired spot
  • Pour roughly 5 lbs. of mineral on the area and smooth out with a stick
  • Pour 2 bottles of water onto the mineral to enable it to start soaking into the ground.
  • Replenish area after all the mineral has been consumed

Homemade mineral is a cheaper alternative than purchasing factory produced supplement. It costs roughly 75 dollars to make 200 lbs. of mineral, which translates to $0.38/ lb. A typical bag of mineral costs the consumer $2.00/ lb. Making your own supplement will provide a $1.62/lb. savings, which can now be spent on other needs.

Give this method a try and experience the change for yourself. Challenge yourself to overcome difficulties and take pride in developing new skills. Remember, the most enjoyable part of the hunting is the challenges it presents. Whether it be, making your own supplement, or figuring out how to pinpoint more deer. There is always a solution to any problem that arises when hunting, and you can conquer it.

Having the desire to become successful in hunting, takes a mindset change and that is the hardest part in this endeavor. We can help you with changing this mindset, and once you have changed you will appreciate the hunt more, and start understanding what being a sportsman/woman is all about. Remember our mission is to redefine tradition. Challenge traditional thinking and push others to do the same. We must dedicate ourselves to hone in on our primal instincts and combine them with new methodologies and technologies to truly master evolution.
