Scent Control: Going the Extra Mile

Scent Control has been a long-disputed topic between sportsman/women. The idea that deer can be influenced by human scent does not sit easy with some folks. But the fact of the matter is that deer can smell at higher levels than humans and they can pick up on unfamiliar smells. Smells that will cause them to turn a different direction or avoid an area all together.  And I know what you are going to say, “I don’t use scent control and I still harvest deer”. I have no doubt in my mind that you are successful in the woods, but let me ask you a few simple questions.

What would you do to kill the buck of a lifetime? Would you consider going all out in every aspect of hunting, to increase the odds for a truly giant buck harvest? Would you take the time to place your hunting clothes in a tote to isolate them from everyday smells? Would you shower before a hunt with scent free shampoo?  Finally, would you be willing to put no scent deodorant on?

If you can answer yes to any of these questions, then you are one step closer in making the switch to a scent controlled lifestyle. The plain fact of the matter is that scent control is not a challenging task. After all you have spent countless preseason hours preparing to hunt. Why not go the extra mile and reduce the amount of disturbance in the woods and utilize scent controlling methods?

I am not saying that you must drop $500 on ozone blocking systems, bags, or camo. But you can practice this methodology with a simple plastic tote, no scent spray, shampoo, deodorant and a garbage bag. That is all that I use and my deer viewing numbers, and close encounters have increased 10X since I become scent cautious.

To start this lifestyle, I am going to give you 4 effortless steps:

  1. Always shower with scent free shampoo, and use scent free deodorant before each hunt
  2. Change into your camo before you enter the woods, but don’t put on your heavier camo apparel until you have reached your spot. This will help reduce the amount you sweat.
  3. Spray down yourself after you have entered your stand
  4. When you return from hunting place all your articles in the tote and spray it down.

These 4 steps will allow you to begin your transition into the scent control mindset. Test this method and record the amount of deer you see compared to the non-scent controlled method. The results will be staggering.
